Fiorentina – Liverpool

Tonight, in the Champions League 2nd round Fiorentina are hosting Liverpool, in one very important game for the Italians, as they lost their first game, and if they suffer one more loss it can be crucial for them.

Fiorentina lost their previous game against Lyon and they cannot afford themselves a new loss because if they suffer it, their chances for going out of this group will decrease a lot, as Lyon are playing against Debrecen and it’s highly possible for them to win the game. But this desperate need of a win doesn’t mean that Fiorentina will play a high-atacking football from the very first minute. Their style of play is more defensive-minded and I don’t think that Cesare Prandelli will betray on it. Even more, one of the big stars of the team, Alberto Gilardino, is suspended and will miss the game, which means that it will be a lot harder for the team to score goals. Till now, in 9 official played games, the team has only 2 games with over 2.5 goals.

Liverpool are just the same as Fiorentina. One team which prefers to play defensively, rather than trying to score goals. That’s still more true in the Liverpool’s away games when Rafa Benitez prefers to wait the other team to make a mistake. And after the win in the first game against Debrecen it’s not necessary for them to create chances and trying so desperately to score goals, so I think that we will see one defensive orientated Liverpool once again. Mascherano is missing the game for sure, as it was unclear for Benayoun but right now he is in the expected starting 11 but it’s not so sure if he is fit enough to play.

Here are the probable starting line-ups for both teams:
Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): Frey; Jorgensen (De Silvestri), Gamberini, Kroldrup, Gobbi; Donadel, C.Zanetti (Montolivo); Marchionni, Mutu, Vargas; Jovetic.

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Skertl, Insua; Pezzini, Gerrard; Benayoun, Kuyt, Riera; Torres.

I expect one close and boring game, when both of the teams will wait for the opponent to make some mistake, and I don’t believe that we will see a lot of goals here.
